Tip No. 1 Keep it simple!
Golden rule number one! If you just began improvising on guitar, try to keep it simple. The less notes you create at the beginning with more thoughts in your mind the more and quicker you will gain knowledge how to improvise.
Tip No. 2 Always think about melody
Melody is a key to nice improvisation skills. Of course you can shred as much as you can, but every great improvisation is based on strong basis of owesome piece of music that can be later on surrounded by more sophisticated piece of your guitar skills.
Tip No. 3 Try to use just one string or 2 at the start
This can sound a little bit strange but try it! Improvise just on one string, going only up and down. Think about individual next tone, should you have move just semi-tone or full tone to get the desired melody and to fit to your background music?
Tip No. 4 Use pentatonic scales!
Pentatonic scales are foundation of any improvisation skills and are able to provide you with basic orientation on fretboard. Get Familiar with them, they are easy and very powerful!
Tip No. 5 Think ahead
Think about your next tone, really do this. There is no need to be in hurry, it is also absolutely ok if you play again some tones you just played to obtain some space to think about where to move next.
Tip No. 6 Does your improvisation fit to the gender of the music of your backing track?
This is fundamenta thing. I heard so many guitarists shredding like metal heros and improvising in this style to very slow romantic piece of music or background music. This just doesn't work. Be musician, not only guitar player. Think about style of music you produce and what role the instrument has there.
Tip No. 7 Try to find unique scales progression
Try to develop your own universal and unique licks and scale progression! I mean, try to develop progression that are not dependent on playins flat strings so that you are easily able to change them and use in any other music.
